A Friend in Need cross stitch pattern is a replica of the most famous painting from the Dogs Playing Poker series, by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge.
This is a large, full coverage cross stitch and the finished piece measures 72.6 x 56.1cm when stitched on 14 count Aida cloth (400 x 309 stitches. There is a lot of fine detail in this cross stitch including the bright red panelled light, faded wall paint, nautical painting, poker chips, pipe smoke, dog collars, and the clock sitting on 1.11am.
It’s a challenging piece as there is a lot of confetti and thread changes, but not to worry. A Friend in Need cross stitch pattern works perfectly with the Pattern Keeper App. Look for the extra PK chart in your download pack.
If you love the cheating poker dogs you aren’t alone:
The “Dogs Playing Poker” paintings, by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, belong to that pantheon of artworks—Michelangelo’s David, Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Hopper’s Nighthawks— that are immediately recognizable to people of all ages and backgrounds, including those who don’t readily admit to enjoying art.
Cassius Marcellus Coolidge lived from 1834 to 1934 and is recognised mostly for his infamous Dogs Play Poker paintings. The paintings in the series are so much fun (plus it’s always nice to get the menfolk interested in cross stitch) we’re determined to chart all 16. You can check them out in-store.
