Cross Stitch Mythology

Cross stitch your own fine art gallery with this stunning interpretation of the maiden Psyche. She’s an enduring symbol of innocence and unyielding commitment to true love.

Description

Psyche and the Golden Box cross stitch pattern is a replica of a 1903 oil painting by British artist John William Waterhouse. It’s classic Romantic period in rich, glowing colours and features the beautiful maiden Psyche ensnared in a trap set by the jealous Venus, Goddess of Love.

The Mortal

Psyche’s innocence and beauty stirs the wrath of Venus, so she commands her son Cupid to destroy the mortal princess in a series of calculating tricks. The plan backfires when Cupid falls in love with Psyche, enraging Venus all the more.

Like all good fairy tales, it all turns out fine in the end, with Cupid convincing the ruling God Zeus to make his beloved immortal and Venus actually dancing at their wedding.

Psyche remains a symbol of purity, humility, and unyielding commitment to true love — beautiful themes for your cross stitch gallery.

The Project

This is a large full coverage cross stitch that measures 54.4cm x 85.8cm (141,900 stitches) when stitched on 14 count Aida cloth. We’ve rated this project ChallengingPLUS as there is a lot of confetti (thread changes) and you’ll need 200 different DMC thread tones. Are you up for the challenge?

The Artist

John William Waterhouse was an English painter who lived between 1849 and 1917. He was famous for his paintings of Arthurian legend, mythology, and literary characters.

His paintings are incredibly lifelike, and we adore his natural backgrounds of wildflowers and mysterious water pools. Check out more cross stitch patterns inspired by John William Waterhouse here in our store.
