Cross Stitch Stars

How about cross stitching one of Van Gogh’s most beautiful paintings — Starry Night Over the Rhône.

We think you’ll love stitching the spectacular night sky and the rich gold starlight reflecting onto the rippled surface of the river.

Description

Starry Night Over the Rhone cross stitch is based on Van Gogh’s 1888 oil painting La Nuit étoilée.

We’re thrilled to transcribe this unique and beautiful painting into a stunning cross stitch project that captures each of the painting’s magnificent elements in vivid detail.

The Project

Be warned, Starry Night Over the Rhone cross stitch is a large, full coverage cross stitch and requires 99 DMC colours with a lot of thread changes. But if you’re up for the challenge you’ll be rewarded with an outstanding piece of art for your favourite wall. Something your friends and family will be talking about for years.

SYMBOLS: we’ve done our best to use symbols that are easily identified, but this chart has 99 different colours and sometimes we do miss stuff. We are humans after all. Just shoot us an email if you have any concerns about the pattern we’ll be happy to update a few symbols if there are a few that are stressing you out.

The Painting

Van Gogh was obsessed with painting the starry night sky and began painting his nightscapes in September 1888. Here’s a brief description of the painting in Van Gogh’s own words:

“Included a small sketch of a 30 square canvas – in short the starry sky painted by night, actually under a gas jet. The sky is aquamarine, the water is royal blue, the ground is mauve. The town is blue and purple. The gas is yellow and the reflections are russet gold descending down to green-bronze. On the aquamarine field of the sky the Great Bear is a sparkling green and pink, whose discreet paleness contrasts with the brutal gold of the gas. Two colorful figurines of lovers in the foreground.”

Letter from Van Gogh to his brother Theo, 28 September 1888

The Artist

Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch Post-impressionist painter who is arguably one of the world’s most famous and influential artists. It’s sadly ironic that he hardly sold a painting during his life (living in poverty for all of his career), but now reproductions of his artwork can be found on cushions, wall prints, mugs, t-shirts, stickers, screensavers … and of course cross stitch projects.

But they are so beautiful we all want to share in the Van Gogh genius.

His work is defined by his bright colours (oh, the Starry Night) and thick, expressive brush strokes. We are so excited about developing more cross stitch patterns of our favourite Vincent Van Gogh paintings. Keep calling back to the store as we add more and more.
